The Kewaskum A’s are your 2025 RRL Grand Champions after an 8-4 win over the Clyman Canners on Sunday afternoon, winning the best of three series (2-1). Dylan Detert led the way with a five hit day at the plate and the A’s got a gritty performance by Nolan Vincent on the mound to take home the title in front of a spirited championship crowd.
After being shut out on Saturday, the A’s got the scoring started in the 1st inning Sunday. Detert doubled to open up the game and eventually came around to score on a well-placed two out RBI single by Jared Chesak. Clyman however answered back with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning to take a 2-1 lead and this game was off and running.
Detert added his second hit of the day in the bottom of the 2nd inning, this time a two out, 2 RBI single to put the A’s back ahead 3-2.
The score remained here until Clyman regained the lead with two runs in the 3rd inning. However it was the A’s who would answer back this time as a Jared Chesak RBI sac fly tied the game at four apiece in the 4th inning.
The teams exchanged missed scoring opportunities over the next two innings, before the A’s busted this one open with a four run 7th inning. Mike Aiello opened the inning with a leadoff walk and Sean Gregorius reached via an error bringing up Brad Young. BY laid down a beautifully placed bunt to load the bases for Nick Rosenthal.
Rosenthal wasted little time jumping on the first pitch he saw for a single to put the A’s up 5-4. Detert followed with a scorching line drive right at the centerfielder for a RBI sac fly and Ethan Sawyer followed that with a RBI double. After a pitching change, Harry Stedlt capped the scoring with a RBI single putting the A’s up 8-4.
Clyman immediately made things interesting as they loaded the bases in the bottom half of the inning, but Nolan Vincent got an infield fly, strikeout and groundout to thwart off the threat. Vincent settled in from there as he retired the final nine batters he faced, getting a strikeout to end it, and the celebration was on!
The A’s pounded out 17 hits in this one led by Detert (5x5, 2B, 3 RBI’s, Sac Fly). Rosenthal (RBI), Sawyer (2B, RBI), Steldt (RBI), Chesak (3 RBI’s) and BY all had multiple hit days at the plate. Vincent finished his day with a 132 pitch complete game effort on the mound scattering 11 hits to go along with 8 strikeouts.
Detert and Andy Neu shared in the playoff MVP honors. Neu put the A’s on his back again on the mound, tossing 44 innings, including two straight shutouts to open up the playoffs in wins over Thiensville-Mequon and Hartford. Neu finished with a stat line of 1.64 ERA, 4 complete games and 30 K’s. Detert on the offensive side was the catalyst when the A’s needed him most, finishing with the beforementioned 5x5 (2B, 3 RBI’s, Sac Fly) day at the plate in Sunday’s deciding game. For the playoffs, Detert pounded out 13 hits (3 doubles, triple) in 27 at-bats (.481 average) while adding 8 runs scored and 3 RBI’s. Not to be overlooked on the offensive side were huge postseason’s by Ethan Sawyer (11x27 – .407 avg, 2B, 3 RBI’s) and Harry Steldt (11x24, .458 avg, two 2B’s, 6 RBI’s).
The championship game win caps off another fantastic year by the A’s as they finish with a 43-17 record which includes tournament championships in Waupaca (Battle on the Chain) and the Wisconsin Amateur Baseball Classic.
A season like this is not possible though without the support of our growing A’s family, friends, fans, sponsors and the long list of players that make a season like this so special. It’s truly is a special group of guys and significant others that dedicate themselves to the madness that is a Kewaskum A’s baseball season.
